Whether you should keep it, extend it, or bypass it entirely depends on three hardware facts most reviews skip. What You Get Stock: The Gen 3 Router’s Real Specs

The Gen 3 router is a WiFi 6 (802.11ax) unit with three radios: 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz client bands plus a dedicated wireless backhaul channel for meshing. On the wired side it carries two Gigabit Ethernet ports — one functions as WAN toward the dish, the other as LAN. That second port is the quiet headline: Gen 2 owners had to buy the separate Starlink Ethernet Adapter to get any wired port at all, while Gen 3 owners don’t.

  • Coverage: roughly 2,000–3,000 sq ft in an open-plan single-story home; expect less through brick or multiple floors.
  • Client capacity: comfortable up to ~128 devices per Starlink’s documentation — realistic comfort is far lower for latency-sensitive use.
  • Mesh: up to 3 additional Gen 3 routers can be paired as nodes via the app, with the satellite nodes repeating over the dedicated backhaul radio.
  • Power: the router runs off the same 54V bus as the dish; typical draw is 20–40W combined with the dish idle.

For grid homes under 2,500 sq ft, the stock router is honestly good enough. The case for third-party gear starts when you want wired backhaul between floors, better QoS, VLANs, VPN, or coverage past the router’s footprint.

Bypass Mode: What It Does, Per Generation

Bypass mode strips the Starlink router out of the data path and hands the public-facing connection to your own router. Each generation handles it differently:

Gen 3 Standard

Easiest by far. Connect your router’s WAN port to the Gen 3 router’s second Ethernet port, then toggle Bypass mode in the app. Your router pulls a DHCP lease straight from the dish. The Gen 3 router stays powered (it’s in the power path) but stops routing. If bypass misbehaves later, hold the reset button for a factory restore.

Gen 2 Standard

Requires the Starlink Ethernet Adapter — a small inline dongle that taps the cable between dish and router. The adapter’s Ethernet output feeds your third-party router’s WAN. Mini

The Mini’s router is built in and WiFi 5 only, but you can still bypass it: connect a USB-C-to-Ethernet adapter to the Mini, and it exposes a wired handoff exactly like the bigger dishes. Practical Wiring Notes

  • Cable quality counts. Between dish, router, and nodes, use shielded outdoor-rated Cat6 for any run outside — see the cable section of our accessories guide.
  • Don’t double-NAT accidentally. If you skip Bypass mode and just plug your router’s WAN into the Starlink LAN port, you get double NAT: harder port forwarding, worse game latency. Turn Bypass on.

Verdict: Keep It Simple Until You Can’t

Gen 3 owners: try the stock router and one mesh node first — it’s included hardware and it works. Upgrade to a bypass mesh when you need wired backhaul, coverage past ~3,000 sq ft, or advanced networking features. Gen 2 owners: budget for the Ethernet Adapter on day one; it unlocks everything above.
